[19] Problem-Solving Strategies
http://Problem Solving Strategies
If we consider about the learning programming conception then this paper might be worth to look at. This paper has published in 1989, however, believed that the point might be still relevant in underlying our research.

[18]Exploring Learner Conceptions of Programming
http://Exploring Learner Conceptions of Programming
What I am thinking that do we need the to consider some conception while learning programming. Booth listed 4 conception of learning programming:
-Learning to program as learning a programming language
-Learning to program as learning to write programs in a programming language
-Learning to program as learning to solve problems in the form of programs
-Learning to program as becoming a part of the programming community
This might be important to scope our design approach for our project.

[17]Program Animation Based on the Roles of Variables
http://Program Animation Based on the Roles of Variables
This paper really concentrated on variables roles that need to comprehend by novice.Interaction between variables is crucial to understand by novice in order to learn to program. While I still not yet reading thoroughly this article.

[16]The Teaching of Novice Computer Programmers
http://The Teaching of Novice Computer Programmers: Bringing the Scholarly-Research Approach to Australia
In this article once illustrates between novice and expert. Expert programmer can organize knowledge into more sophisticated and flexible form. They can form abstract representations based upon what the code does whereas novices form concrete representations based on the code itself.

[15]Holistic Learners
http://Concept Mapping and Appropriate Instructional Strategies in Promoting Programming Skills of Holistic Learners
Holistic learners are divergent thinkers who have difficulties in seeing the whole picture of a subject [Kolb, 1976]. They prefer undirected learning styles, which lead to difficulties in selecting and analysing material, and making decisions [Vermunt, 1996]. Sequential processing of information during programming activities in current programming classrooms results in the overloading of holistic learners’ information processing capabilities. This statement i just grab from the article to get overview what is holistic learners refers to. Then, my hypothesis that we need to consider this type of learners in CSSE1001 while designing and developing our project.

[11]First step in programming
http://First steps in Programming: A Rationale for Attention Investment Models
At a glance, I think useful article to put in our literature section. This article discussed about the programming in theoretical and definition perspective. Still not yet look in detail to pull out key point from this article.

[10] Novice Programmers Psychology
The psychology of how novices learn computer programming.
This paper is quite old, published 1981 by Richard E.Mayer. But, I think is still can be adapt at some point today. I will search for other works done by Mayer. I still not yet finished reading it to grasp a key point about the psychology issue among novice programmers.

[9]Novice Programmers mental model
I still not yet reading this short article (5 page) but grasp some point from the abstract. This paper proposes a constructivist-based teaching model that integrates cognitive conflict and program visualisation with the aim of supporting novice programmers in the formulation of appropriate mental models. Also with empirical data that leads to result to three findings. However, I believe they are some point might be useful to consider for our project.

[8]Helping Novice Programmers Bridge the Conceptual Gap
Helping Novice Programmers Bridge the Conceptual Gap
At a glance, this 1994 article has raised the issue about novice mistakes and tutoring them in programming world instead making correlation between the programming world and the daily world. It is the issue that we tried to overcome for this project. I still not have chance to read it thoroughly to pull out the key point from this article.

Programming Concept Visualisation in CS0 with Alice
This article, at the glance, in my opinion we can adapt some idea to identify object to visualize the concept of programming. I still not yet reading it thoroughly, however, strongly believe this article can be source of inspiration towards project completion.

[6]Study of assesment of programming skills
I am not yet reading throughly this paper. However, I think it might be useful for us to design our project by following the suggested framework for computer science assessment that described on this paper.

[5]Novice Programming Comes of Age
http://www.4shared.com/file/125265696/1af95ade/p75-smith.html
This paper can give us an idea how we going to design our prototype. The author also show link between Bruner's theory that has been adapt by Roger for developing applet for teacher. There was a section in this paper that illustrates what the users does and what the computer records. For example, for operation move, drag an object with the mouse and what computer records was move object to location. What I think can be underlying foundation to understand the programming concept.Other 3 operation illustrates in Table I in this paper.

[2] Full Report:team 3a
This is the report from the previous student who done the same project theme with us.In this report, they include the background study about this topic and the documentation about their prototype. Also include the method and material for requirement and prototype testing.
The team has developed game-board like as a paper and digital prototype to teach programming concept for assignment,if, and while loop. They tested the prototype to 6 participants. The metaphor used for their prototype was bus stop programming. users played act as a school bus driver. They simulate assignment concept by picking up and drop off children. The selection to one/two ways if certain condition is fulfilled to illustrate the if concept. The while loop presented as driving bus in a circular road repetitively until certain condition is fulfilled.
If we looked at into the table of content of this report, they layout their report as followed. The abstract that include what has been developed, about EIS and summary of their background study. They summarize some key points from the literature and the prototype in introduction section.
Their background study has pointed out issues including as followed:
-->understanding students new to programming that covered uncovering problems in learning programming, understand student needs to reduce the problems, relating needs to design of the software
-->Learning and teaching styles that covered the teaching styles commonly used by textbook for teaching programming, constructivism learning theory and how organizing learning curriculum around certain fundamental ideas can improve the success of teaching programming concept, Entering into symbol project which uses Bruner's EIS learning to teach basic algebra. They also explain about how the applet for teacher that developed by Roger and folks works in order to follow the OIS framework.
-->Existing software that teaches programming described:The “Animation Director Movies”: teach CS1 Programming Concept ,Pre-Programming Analysis Guided Programming (PAGP),Game for teaching programming: Wu’s Castle,Implications of Prototype Design
-->The Design Process that described Brainstorming Ideas, participatory design process including requirements gathering,lo-fi paper prototype, hi-fi digital prototype, evaluation of digital prototype. All related figure also shown in this section.I can assumed that progress meant by Kathy in the course that as presented in this section.
-->Discussion section explained the links between the EIS principle to the project. What has been adapt and followed described in detail in this section. Then we need to consider to be on track for this project. At this stage we can refer back to the post "Applet for teacher" for the first instance.

[1] Applet for teacher
As our project is based on EIS framework and adapting from the concept that has been applied in teaching algebra, then this literature quite useful to read. This is the book chapter by Roger and Alan that has developed the applet for teaching algebra. They has used matches and matchbox as metaphor of algebra. The algebra problem has been visualized by guessing how many matches inside the matchbox. This metaphor can be considered accepted by learner instead of misconception by learners when using apple and banana as a metaphor to teach algebra.
Therefore, for our project we needs to brainstorm the most relevant and acceptable metaphor among learners, in particular to simulate the concept of programming in iconic way.
All above is my initial reflection after thoroughly reading the article towards our project and also my understanding about what has been written. You can post the comment about your understanding if you have any chance to read the article.
